Independence Day
September 16, 2005

Every 16th of September,
Mexicans
celebrate Mexico's independence from Spanish rule. This date
actually marks the start of the Independence War, which lasted for
10 years. In the early morning of September 16, 1810, Padre
Hidalgo issued the proclamation
El Grito del Dolores (the Cry of Freedom) and a group of
conspirators rang the bell of his small church and called on
everyone to fight for liberty, uniting the various rebellious
Mexican forces against Spanish lordship.
Independence Day is indisputably Mexico's most important, and most
revered National Holiday, often times called Dia de la Patria.
During this time, Fiestas Patrias take place nationwide, starting
on the evening of September 15th. People wear the colors of the
flag on their clothes or proudly wear traditional garments. There
are special dishes for that day including "Chiles Enogada" and the
people usually drink Tequila. There are bands, marimbas and
mariachis.
The
skies of all the cities are full of fireworks and the bells of the
municipal palace start ringing at midnight when the President of
the Republic shouts the Cry
(El Grito) "Viva
Mexico" from the balcony of the National Palace, this event is
televised and broadcast on radio to every corner of the nation, as
Mexicans cry back with "Viva" in an emotion packed
traditional ritual.
This is a wonderful time to be in Mexico
