Punta Mita, Riviera Nayarit’s and Mexico’s most exclusive address and gated community of luxury resorts and private residences, registered an outstanding 2012 Festive season, closing out the year with record occupancy levels while looking ahead to continued growth for the coming year. Indications bode well that 2013 will continue the upward trend for Punta Mita in welcoming a growing number of luxury travelers, increasing real estate sales and welcoming celebrities and dignitaries who appreciate the privacy and exclusivity of this naturally exquisite coastal community.
For the St. Regis Punta Mita Resort, which opened its doors in November 2008, 2012 was its best-ever year, with annual figures including increases in occupancy of 21%, revenue per available room (RevPAR) of 27% and revenues up 30% over 2011. They enjoyed an especially strong close, with bookings up over 30% over last year, and a complete sell-out over the Festive weeks – from December 24 to January 6 – with guests enjoying a full agenda of special activities and parties. More than 35% were repeat guests, demonstrating the strength of the resort in client satisfaction. St. Regis General Manager Carl Emberson reports that January 2013 is also off to a great start, with a 50% increase in bookings over the prior year. He also noted the presence of new clients coming from Brazil, UK and Russia, in addition to their base clientele from the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, the original resort to open on this private peninsular, also enjoyed a complete sell-out over Festive season dates, including all of its private villas and suites. As many as 50% of the guests were repeat visitors, and approximately 70% of their guests were traveling as part of a family or multi-generational group. Four Seasons has developed an esteemed reputation as a top family-friendly resort experience, with an acclaimed Kids For All Seasons activities program. Four Seasons enjoyed their highest average rate during this period, and had a number of celebrities in-house although – shhhh! – their policy is to never tell who. The year 2012 saw a strong increase in the resort’s group business, which will continue to gain ground in 2013. Bookings for the first quarter of 2013 are very positive, giving the year a strong start.
With respect to private residences within Punta Mita, the Punta Mita Homeowners Association reported that 95% of the more than 220 residences were either occupied or rented during the period extending from December 17, 2012 to January 6, 2013. The primary rental agencies reported banner years, with increases in both average length of stay (from 6 nights to 8 nights), and rates. Approximately 19% of rental guests were Mexican citizens, while 81% of the guests traveled from the U.S., Canada, Europe and Russia.
Punta Mita also attracted the spotlight of media attention throughout 2012, thanks to a growing roster of celebrity guests, political dignitaries and business VIPs who enjoy Punta Mita’s privacy. Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez lit up the resort with their visit at the year’s end, while other celebrity guests who chose the Punta Mita area for holiday vacation time this 2012-13 season included Joan Rivers and Diahann Carroll– both of whom are repeat visitors here. Included among the headliner visits of 2012 were Charlie Sheen, the Kardashian sisters, and the wedding of Mario Lopez. Star guests of the St. Regis included Kirsten Dunst, Hilary Duff, Drew Brees, Lorena Ochoa and several visits by Mexico’s incoming president, Enrique Peña Nieto and his family.
In general, Punta Mita enjoyed abundant activity throughout the resort community, from the private Residents’ Beach Clubs to the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses.
Confidence has returned, both with respect to luxury travel as well as to the purchase of resort real estate. During the festive weeks, the Punta Mita Properties real estate office reported a significant increase in property tours and real estate inquiries. Punta Mita Properties Real Estate offices are located in the lobby of the Four Seasons Resort, at the entry of the St. Regis Resort, and their main office, located across from the Four Seasons Resort.
As 2013 gets underway, Punta Mita is reclaiming its position as a sizzling hot destination and the preferred place for barefoot luxury. Says Emberson: “Our guests, especially our repeat guests who total 20% of all reservations, know that we can, and do, create experiences that incorporate the resort and the surrounding area into their vacation stay.”
